December 2025 | San Jose, CA — Pando Electric today announced a major advancement in EV charging usability and reliability with the latest update to its Gen2 platform. Starting this month, all Gen2 outlets will feature tap-and-charge functionality that works in any building, with or without WiFi, cellular service, or app connectivity.
Through a combination of hardware-level NFC integration and a proprietary dual-channel mesh network, Gen2 chargers allow drivers to start a session with just their phone, smartwatch, or building access fob: no mobile app, no QR codes, and no internet required.
“Everyone in EV charging is chasing features. We’re chasing reliability,” said Aaron Li, CEO of Pando Electric. “Gen2 was designed to just work: online, offline, above ground, underground, anywhere. And now charging is as easy as tapping your phone.”
The new functionality supports multiple methods of access:
- Phone or smartwatch — Tap via Apple or Google Wallet
- Building credentials — Resident fob, student ID, or other NFC badge
- In-app — Activate directly via the Pando app, if desired
- Manual override — Even without a phone or app, Gen2 can be activated with a side button in “dummy” mode
Behind the scenes, Gen2 uses a dual-layer system to ensure uninterrupted performance:
- A self-forming mesh network allows all chargers in a building to stay connected, even if only one device has internet access
- A direct peer-to-peer fallback enables tap-and-charge sessions even in fully offline environments
- In “offline-first” mode, the charger syncs usage data automatically when the user’s phone reconnects to the cloud
Unlike traditional charging systems that require consistent cloud access or building-wide connectivity, Pando Gen2 is built to thrive in real-world conditions — basements, garages, rural areas, and buildings with no IT infrastructure.
